Amalia Solano was in Washington, D.C. on September 11. When she heard of the attacks she got on a bus to New York City and arrived at Ground Zero to volunteer.
The bulk of her work over the following ten months involved working with the Fire Department digging for remains.
When the site closed, she went to Virginia to train to become a firefighter. Severely injured in her final month of training, Amalia was unable to realize her dream of becoming a firefighter. She is now in school, working towards her graduate degree to become a physician's assistant.
